  • How to improve my English speaking skills?

Posted by Sadhika Anand on March 3, 2021 at 6:40 am

I’ve failed countless interviews because of my English speaking skills. I’m bit embarrassed about it but I want to improve it.

Hi Sadhika. It’s indeed a common problem in the masses since English is not our native language. But don’t worry. List down the obvious interview questions or the concepts of whichever field you’re working in and pick your doubts or arguments from it. Now, you can go and talk to your friend from the same field or a colleague about it. Speaking to someone senior would be even better.

Sadhika you should also listen to podcasts. There are tons of podcasts available for general as well as technical topics. Search for the ones related to your field and start listening those.

The majority of the podcasts are produced by native English speakers and hence it adds a few little words, if not many, in your dictionary.

IMO, this is not a two-day exercise, but something to follow throughout.

Btw, someone mentioned podcast. I use Pocket Casts – Android Apps on Google Play but you can use other (free) alternatives to listen to podcasts.

You shouldn’t be embarrassed because English is neither our mother tongue nor we speak English in our daily lives. It’s okay if you’re not good at it. You can definitely improve once you start practicing speaking in front of a mirror or by listening to English shows and songs.

I watched countless English movies with subtitles and did mirroring technique to improve my English speaking skills. In this way, you also somehow adapt the accent too.

Reading books is the best way to speak English fluently. However, practice makes a man/women perfect. So, read out loud, correct yourself at mistakes, practice again and again.

The best way to speak fluent English is by socializing yourself. The more you talk to people the more your vocabulary will enhance.

It’s ok to speak broken English, until and unless you are able to communicate with your peers. However, learning English can help you in many ways. The best ways to learn English are:

    • Reading a book for 30 mins daily.
    • Talking to peers in English.
    • Watching English movies.
    • Reading out loud what your are writing (If you write articles and blog posts).
