Making a Career in Blockchain Technology and the Skills you Need

Making a career in Blockchain Technology

Words like non-fungible tokens, bitcoin, Ethereum, etc., are not just coffee talk but a full-fledged career option on the rise. According to LinkedIn, Blockchains are among the top 10 hard skills employers seek. If this is an area you want to explore, you are just at the right place in this blog, I shall dive deep into how you can make a career in blockchain technology and the skills you need.

What is blockchain technology?

In simple terms, it is a system of making transactions, keeping records, and verifying data in a decentralized way.

In the blockchain system, each user acts as a node with the device they operate the blockchain. These nodes are the roots of the blockchain tree on which all the other transactions are processed.

Did you know?

The creator of blockchain is still unidentified, and the pseudonym for the father of blockchain technology is Satoshi Nakamoto.

Hence, Satoshi is the smallest unit of the bitcoin cryptocurrency.

Types of Blockchains

There are four broad categories or types of blockchain

1. Public Blockchain

  • Access: Open, it can be used by anyone
  • Every user has equal power
  • Commonly used for Mining, exchanging cryptocurrency, and non-fungible tokens trading
  • Examples: Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum
  • Consensus mechanism: Proof of Work (POW) and Proof of stake (POS)

2. Private Blockchain

  •  Access: Centralized, Require permission

Single Party determines rules

  •    Commonly used for: voting, supply chain management, digital identity, asset ownership, etc.
    Examples :

Hyperledger fabrics
( Members- Walmart, Visa, FedEx, Huawei, Aetna,  and Telefonica)

            Corda
( Members- MasterCard, Wells Fargo, MoneyGram, Nasdaq,  government central banks, and financial regulators worldwide.)

Consensus mechanism: Proof of Authority (POA), Proof of Elapsed time (POET), etc

3. Consortium or federated blockchain

  •   Access Semi-decentralized and managed by more than one organization
  • Pre-selected equally privileged participants.
  • Commonly used for: Organization with common goals to enhance workflow, accountability, and transparency. It also saves time and development costs.
  • Examples: Multichain, Ethermint, Tendermint, Quorum

Consensus mechanism: Practical byzantine fault tolerant (PBT), Byzantine Fault Tolerant Raft (BFT Raft) consensus

4. Hybrid blockchain

  • Access: Decentralized, When a user joins, they have full access to the network.

It includes features of both public and private blockchain.

Hybrid blockchains allow organizations to have a private, permission-based, public permissionless system when needed, where the records and transactions can be made public and accessed by anyone through a smart contract.

Tech firms- These are the number one primary hiring organizations as they have so much at stake, and with blockchains taking over the world and a shift to a decentralized system, they need as much expertise as they can acquire.Startups – These include the independent businesses and products created after the inception of blockchain. Commonly used for: Having a flexible control system with the best of both worlds of public and private blockchain.

Who is Hiring?

According to the skill index of 2022, blockchain is one of the fastest growing skills; hence, if you wish to make a career out of it, you must know the players in the market who are hiring.

Industries – Would you believe if I told you that this skill is being employed by most big organizations like law offices, retailers, insurance, banks, and accounting firms and are inculcating techies who would keep them in pace with this dynamic world of digital technology?

Governments – Hiring crypto experts for advice and expertise in the blockchain world, making blockchain professionals high in demand.

        • The blockchain database is encrypted and decentralized.
        • information stores in a network of devices, namely, nodes, instead of one single database
        • Resolved hacking threats as there is no single ownership

Startups – These include the independent businesses and products created after the inception of blockchain.

Reasons for the increasing demand for blockchain skills

Since the pandemic crisis, the world has shifted towards digital transformation. Most businesses had to reform their supply chains and conventional operations, for which blockchain technology played a very valuable role.

Hence, in this section, we will understand what advantages of blockchain lead to them being one of the leading career skills in the market.

1. Secure and Decentralized

  • The blockchain database is encrypted and decentralized.
  • information stores in a network of devices, namely, nodes, instead of one single database
  • Resolved hacking threats as there is no single ownership

2. Transparent Transactions

  • Altering records is practically impossible
  • Even if an attempt to alter is made, it will reflect on the entire chain, ensuring transparency.

3. Fast and Efficient

  • No need for intermediaries or middlemen
  • Faster negotiations, transactions, and settlements
  • Everything is recorded in a digital ledger; hence no interruptions

4. Audit Trails

  • Traceable data functioning as an audit trail from the origin of an asset to the milestones it has been through
  • The audit trail provides information from the identity of users to timestamps of transactions.

Key Takeaways

  • Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger that facilitates the process of recording transactions and tracking assets in a business network.
  • Scope of jobs and career in blockchain technology
  • What job fits you best in the blockchain world?
